Santa Cruz La Laguna, is located on the North shore of Lake Atitlan. Consisting of 3200 inhabitants, with a 99% indigenous population of Maya and Kakchiquel. At 1666 mts above sea level, this village is one of 5 other communities, 2 on the shore line Jaibalito and Tzununa and the others perched up on the mountainside. Santa Cruz La Laguna, the main village, was named after Santa Elena de la Cruz and the fiesta day of the pueblo is on May the 3rd. Santa Cruz is one of the poorest villages in Guatemala and is located at the end of a steep path extending from the dock on the shore to the center of town. There is dirt road access however, it is very dangerous and a 4x4 is required. Along the shore you will find several hotels and restaurants and it is where most of the foreigners live. Named the "Water Sports Capital of the Lake", because it offers scuba diving, water skiing, kayak rentals and a lot of partying" (From Sol de Atitlan Magazine) it is also one of the few villages in Guatemala with no crime. Therefore you will find many single women and mothers living in the area.
